Gallery label: De Monfreid painted this canvas in 1889, the same year he entered the Paris art arena by exhibiting with Paul Gauguin and his Pont-Aven School colleagues. While De Monfreid emphasized the scene's intense light, he also endowed the rocky shore and small hut with a convincing sense of volume and solidity.
